Multi-platinum recording artist John Legend previewed his October release, Evolver (Columbia), in true grown man fashion and rightfully so. The album will be his third effort since his 2004 debut, Get Lifted (Columbia). Wearing a black shirt, cargo shorts, and matching Nikes, Legend offered a spread of fruits, wines, and cheeses to go along with the afternoon’s showcase, which is both mature and fun.

Evolver maintains a consistency faithful fans will appreciate, but is enough of a departure from the norm to bring in some new ears. Each of the ten cuts played were soaked in Legend’s signature soulful melodies and layers of thick, but smooth vocals. What will be a pleasant surprise for many is the album’s more aggressive approach to the music. With a strong assembly of bass and drum patterns on more than a few tracks, as well as contributions from Kanye West, Pharrell, Andre 3000, and Will.i.am., Evolver is a solid collection of songs that will encourage rump shaking in clubs and slow winding behind closed doors.

Below, a track by track breakdown of what VIBE.com heard.

“Green Light” Feat. Andre 3000 – John Legend goes to clubs? Yes, indeed. Along with Outkast wordsmith Andre 3000, Legend tells his lady of interest that he is “ready to go right now” on the futuristic tune. It’s a charming exit from his usual piano driven schemes. The song is the album's first single.

“It’s Over” Feat. Kanye West – Perhaps the most funky and triumphant rejection song ever, Kanye, with the help of the voice augmenting vocoder, dumps his girl saying they are like “Jay-Z and Def Jam” as Legend repeatedly sings, “Why do you keep calling me?”

“Everybody Knows”– Mid-tempo cut about ending a relationship that’s obviously destined for failure.

“No Other Love” Feat. Estelle – Legend and his musical protege from across the pond play couple, confessing their love for each other on this bouncy, reggae-like track.

“This Time” – Legend promises to be the man his love interest always needed on this airy ballad.

“Satisfaction” – On this mid-tempo groove, Legend tells his lady to do more than just say she loves him. He wants her to show him. He wants some satisfaction. The song arguably boasts the album’s best bridge, which makes the good amazing.

“Take Me Away” – Legend heroically whisks a troubled beauty away from a bad relationship and takes her to lover’s land on this simple, sweet cut.

“Good Morning” – Over light horns Legend tries to smooth talk his mattress-mate in to staying in bed a little while longer to watch the sunrise and maybe continue where they left off on the night prior.

“I Love, You Love” – This ballad is throwback Legend, and primed for the quiet storm hours on radio.

“If You’re Out There” – Evolver’s lone socially conscious track. Legend calls all who are willing to join in efforts to better our world.
