Beat Tape: The Admiral- Deeper Than You Think (2009) - I always receive a pissload of emails from wannabe rapper types who swear that their music is so ill AIDS is scared to catch it (word to Bis). 99% of the music is terribly drenched in mediocrity, of course. This is one of those 1% when I’ve received something worthwhile. The Admiral’s Deeper Than You Think is a beat tape supposedly inspired by the two wonderlords of hip-hop purists — Madlib and J Dilla.
Says The Admiral: “The whole project was inspired by Madlib’s Shades of Blue, I bought it on vinyl a few months ago and listened to “Montara” on it and it sparked the light. J Dilla’s production also provided inspiration for the project.”
I don’t know if it’s the brilliant skits or the lightweight soul sludge, but I stayed up till 3 am listening to this over and over for some weird reason. It’s definitely chill music, so don’t come in here with your dancing shoes on.
