- Why does the EU want Lithuania to shut down Ignalina NPP?
Although the reactors have been significantly modified and upgraded over the past
years, it was not possible to achieve a required safety level. Weaknesses in the
design of the containment, especially in case of a severe accident mean that it is not
realistic to upgrade the containment to include the complete reactor pressure
boundary. Consequently, regarding mitigation of accidents, the required safety level
will not be reached. Nuclear energy can play an important role to face the today's
challenges, however never for the price to compromise safety.
The RBMK type reactors such as those of Ignalina NNP, cannot be economically
upgraded to a required level of safety and should be closed, i.e. they are an
acknowledged high risk. In recent years unsafe reactors were shut down in Bulgaria
and Slovakia. Lithuania committed to closing Unit 1 of INPP before 2005 and Unit 2
by 2009.

бла-бла-бла. почему же тогда уже после вступления, закрытия одного и начала работ по закрытию второго те же самые эксперты заговорили совсем иначе?

В Чехии, Словакии, Венгрии ворчат себе дальше советские реакторы (да, не РБМК, а ВВЭР - которые ещё старее).
