Much as i know, a track becomes "rare sh!t" if some sample is not cleared, or the track didn't make the final tracklist of an album, or the rapper just didn't like it at that time so he/she shelved it. Hey, Nas's "Lost Tapes, vol. 1" is made up of shelved material.
