4. Madvillain

Some years back, I noticed Madlib was busy doing all this music by himself for himself. Most of it was Quasimoto and Yesterday’s New Quintet, but he was also working on albums with MED and Dudley Perkins. From time to time, I’d ask him who outside of the crew he’d wanna work with. He’d mention Dilla and Doom. Madlib and I both really liked the first KMD album, but a lot of rappers from that era kinda fell off and with Doom, he went into hiding for damn near 10 years and then just came out of nowhere and still was dope enough to compete with the any of the post-millennium rappers out there. Doom had only released the Operation Doomsday solo album at the time and I spoke to Bobbito—who originally released it on Fondle Em—about having Madlib do a remix of “Rimes Like Dimes” which was our favorite song at the time. That never happened, but Egon had a friend named John Doe who knew Doom, so eventually we got a hold of him.

Doom had never heard Madlib’s stuff, but we sent him a CD and he liked it enough to agree to work with us. We set it up for him to come to LA to record an album, so he came out and I remember being nervous when I picked him up at the airport. Not because I wouldn’t know what to say, but because I thought I’d get in a car accident. I felt the same way when I had Prince Paul in my car 5 years earlier in SF. Doom hadn’t really sold that many records yet, but I get that way with people who I know are musical geniuses.

He was really personable the first day and stayed that way throughout the several trips he came out here. I never really had contracts with any artists at that point. It was all handshake because I only worked with people I knew well and was always hands off on the legal tip. When Doom asked about a contract, I wrote it out by hand and it was a onepager. It just said the advance amount and that we’d split profits 50/50 after that. Nowadays, I have full contracts with all my artists and I realize that it’s to spell out all the hypothetical situations and that this is in everyone’s best interest. But the point is, we were all very casual about what we were doing. Everyone went into it with the goal of putting together the best album we could and we trusted that if it worked out, everything else would fall in place.

He brought his own portable studio and he’d sit in the Bomb Shelter in my house and record. I remember the first two songs were “Meat Grinder” and “Figaro.” Sometimes, he’d record in my bedroom as well late at night and I’d stay in a hotel so I wouldn’t interrupt him. We put him up in the Miyako Inn downtown, but he’d sleep on the floor in my home studio a lot when he was on a roll creatively. The house is really a dump with water leaks and mold problems, but it has a balcony with a beautiful view of the city– I call it wannabe MTV Cribs. He’d write lyrics on the balcony and go downstairs, which was below ground level, to record. Since then, he’s done Danger Doom, Viktor Vaughn, Food, King Ghedorah, and now he’s working on the album with Ghostface. He can go to any studio he wants, but he told me he wants to do Madvillain 2 the same way as #1 because he loves the vibe of The Bomb Shelter, despite all the problems with the house. Like everyone else, I’m patiently waiting for that to happen.
