Keenan, a 15-year-old from outside Chicago who looks closer to 9, has had a small cult following for the last two years thanks to his YouTube videos, in which he sweetly, emphatically, weirdly lip syncs to pop songs (or, sometimes, goes a capella). His videos routinely got hundreds of thousands of hits. More than 800,000 people, for example, watched him eat, and choke on, a cookie.

But this month, just as Keenan was preparing for the big jump to high school, his online fame exploded, thanks to his latest video, in which he rocks out to the Katy Perry song "Teenage Dream." Or, more specifically, thanks to Perry's endorsement of the video. (She tweeted that she loved him.) That clip is approaching 6 million views, and he now has more than 40,000 subscribers to his YouTube feed.

Celebrity, Keenan says, has its ups and downs. He repeatedly turns down requests from his classmates for "shout-outs" in his videos, and there are the comments about his appearance.

"I think that is a reason why I stand out. I'm fine with that. I just don't care what people say about me."
