[09.04.2013 15:46:17] Long: Don't modify this piece.
Lets be clear about what is realistic and what is Gearslutz, poser bullshit.
The Pre73 doesn't sound like a Neve 1073. It DOES have similar sonic characteristics to the 1073 that firmly put it's sound in the family of classic sounding preamps that are similar to the 1073. But it's NOT a faithful clone of that famous unit, nor do I think it was ever intended to be, nor do I think it ever needs to be to get a great vintage preamp sound out of it.
The types of modification necessary to make the Pre73 sound like a 1073 would require a complete change in the circuit layout, a complete change in many parts as well as transformers. There is NO EASY WAY TO MODIFY IT AND MAKE IT SOUND AUTHENTICALLY LIKE A 1073. That's foolish, rumor, hearsay and opinion, and it's simply not true. Changing the transformers will change the sound, but it won't make this piece any cooler or better. It will just make it different and most unskilled people will probably make it worse with their efforts.
The people talking about modification have an agenda to feed into the hype around the "modification myth": The notion that a piece that is perceived as inferior can easily and relatively cheaply be tweaked into a something much better. But that is a lie. The modification myth is a lie. There are very few units that can easily be modified to be much better. I know many people will tell you different, but it's just not that simple to make things sound better through modification. It can be done. But to do it right usually far exceeds the knowlege and expertise of most would be mod attempters |
